Now we live in Hawaii so we get a lot of rain but even on sunny days it wouldn't produce. We called and texted and emailed Doug and he replied every time, but it was almost always with an excuse or just an attitude. It was almost like it was our fault the thing wasn't working.
Here's the bad news, In my opinion he has no idea what he is doing with the hot water systems. After the system started to fail, we were out of hot water for over...Well, until yesterday we were still out of hot water.
We had a problem where we did not have more than a showers' worth of hot water. Solar Plus came in, said our 40 gallon water heater was too small, and suggested upgrading to an 80 gallon water heater. We let them upgrade, it, but then we were left with exactly the same problem as before, still only one shower's worth of hot water. So $1600 later and we had no fix. They have refused to come and fix this. So avoid this place at all cost.
Very knowledgeable and professional team. Highly recommended!
I had Doug replace the aged Outback system on the property that we just purchased, with a new modern Outback system. After discussing how to migrate from the old system to new system, without losing power (we are totally off-grid), we signed the contract. Doug began the next week, installing the new Outback components, batteries, and 3 of the new panels (on the lawn) to get us by. We were only without power for a few minutes. Later he removed the old panels, installed the new panels on the roof along with the ones on the lawn. He also switched the house to 240v capable and installed a CAT-5 cable in the conduit carrying the old system's monitoring wires (the solar array and system is on a guest house, the internet is in the main house that is 100' away). So now he can monitor the system over the Internet (as we can). Doug was very accommodating to us in the transition from the old to new system, as he had to move and remove various components a few times. He completed the job on time, and the workers that helped him were very knowledgeable and professional - I spent a lot of time talking to them.
If it isn't fixed this time, I'll give Doug a chance to do the work right and then I guess the next step is small claims court. Should have gone with our second choice Nathan Wood.
When we decided to get solar we had absolutely no clue what we were doing. We contacted every contractor in town and went with Soalr plus. It wasnt an easy choice (lots of companies to choose from), but we liked Doug. He came to the house, took a look at what we were trying to do and then helped us decide what would work the best. From that moment on...its been interesting...Here's the good news. They were quick and efficient (so much so that it took the utility company two weeks just to catch up) and seem to have done a good with the PV, at least it works...sort of
I always remained cordial and even tried to tell him where I thought the problem was. His reply "don't ever tell me whats wrong again". It's now gotten to a point where if this fix doesn't work I'm going to have to call in another solar guy to see if this thing is even set up right. He installed it out of code The access panels were facing a wall) and had to come back to fix that, then "forgot" to call for inspection. "He isn't a plumber" (his words) and had to call a friend to get pull the permits because " I don't normally have to pull permits on solar heating systems I just Install them."
Now it has been a few weeks since the system has been 100% online and everything is going as expected. We have only run the generator for 2 of the rainy days over the 2+ weeks, and today is the shortest day of the year (12/21). The system is performing as expected, and Doug's knowledge of the components and how to design/balance/configure the system etc was very good. I am an engineer and so I did lots of independent research into the components and am very satisfied in Doug's choices.
After the installation the system worked great for a couple of weeks. Then something happened. We don't know what but we would run out of hot water overnight or after two showers. Baths? Dont even think about it! No matter what the weather it just didn't work.
